A wet and dreary day was brightened up with a Powerplay hockey game at Bonner-Prendergast High School on Saturday, March 14th. Although it was a little chilly in the gym, both teams were eager to warm up and start the game. In the first couple of minutes, Blue jumped out to an early lead with two laser beam goals from center Alex Pitts. But Red quickly answered with a couple goals of their own from forwards Jake Saxton and Liam Miller. By the end of the first period, Red held a two-goal lead.
Going into the second period, Red wanted to build on their lead and they did just that with goals from Caitlin Dontonville, Michele Boardman, and another tally from Saxton.
Down by three goals at the beginning of the third period, Blue goalie Greg Smith kept his team in the game with huge saves including his version of a glove save, catching Saxton’s wrist shot with his right hand. Blue also revved up their aggressiveness and pressured Red to get back in the game. The second line of team Blue cut the lead down to two with goals from Lea Danaghy and AJ Rinker about halfway through the final period. Shortly after scoring, Rinker was escorted to the penalty box after ramming into Boardman. But the penalty didn’t stop Blue as Erin Gordon scored a huge short-handed goal capitalizing on a Red turnover in their own zone. This cut the lead down to one and Blue made a final push to tie the game by pulling Smith from the net and sending him down into Red’s zone. The final push came up short as time expired and Red pulled out a close and evenly matched victory.
The next Powerplay game is scheduled for Saturday, March 21st at Norristown PAL at 11:00am. Come out and support the team!
